Memorable gowns of 2017

With the spring/summer 2018 collections accommodating for the red carpet more than ever, there's no denying Hollywood's impact on fashion over the last 12 months.

Bella Hadid in Ralph & Russo
No-one does barely-there event dressing like Bella Hadid. In the year she turned 21, the model continued her crusade as one of the red carpet's most daring. This number by British couturiers Ralph & Russo blurred the line between lingerie, jewellery and gown, resulting in a head-turning option that could slot so effortlessly in few others' wardrobes.

Gigi Hadid in The Row
If her sister's most memorable red-carpet moment has barely-there dressing at its centre, this Hadid has a moment created by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen to thank. More demure, less flesh, equally fabulous - this felt new for the 22-year-old and a step into the simple territory the Vogue cover girl should revisit more in the 12 months to come. A well-made match, Mary-Kate previously told Miss Vogue that Gigi is her style icon.

Cara Delevingne in Iris van Herpen
When you're promoting a sci-fi film, looking to a designer that places tech and textile innovations at the forefront of their approach feels like a natural fit. Iris van Herpen's couture option worn by Delevingne at a Valerian premiere was an example of how seamlessly this can play out. The peekaboo twisted wires were complemented with old-school finger waves and a signature littering of rings.

Emma Watson in louis vuitton
Watson's approach to playing one of Disney's most-adored princesses was all about shining a new feminist light on the character, and so too did her wardrobe approach take on a 21st-Century way of dressing when it came to promoting Beauty and the Beast. With a focus placed on sustainability and environmental impact, Watson and her team created The Press Tour to document each look. This Emilia Wickstead gown proved to be the stand-out moment.

Rihanna in Comme des Garรงons
The Met Ball in May saw fewer red-carpet looks seeking direct inspiration from the theme - Comme des Garรงons/Rei Kawakubo - than previous years. Never one not to indulge in the evening's dresscode, Rihanna took it and ran with it being one of the few to actually wear a Kawakubo design. Her Commes look was first seen on the autumn/winter 2016 catwalk and proved to be the shot of avant garde the evening needed. It sometimes pays to be safe, but look how much more fabulous taking a risk can be.
